SURREY, BC – British Columbia’s field coroners are calling for a pay raise, stating that their current hourly wage of just over $32 places them among the lowest-paid emergency service workers in the province. This is despite their involvement in often risky and stressful situations

They’ve sent a letter to their bosses and members of the legislature, highlighting that they haven’t received a pay increase in nearly a decade.

The coroners argue that the lack of adequate compensation for being on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, has made it challenging to retain qualified personnel.

The letter also points out a “glaring inequity” in how investigative coroners and field coroners are compensated. Field coroners, who attend scenes where deaths have occurred, face significant risks in their duties.
