SURREY, B.C. – BC Ferries has announced a clarification of its internal policies, now prohibiting tow trucks from transporting non-operational electric vehicles (EVs) on its vessels.
This decision aligns with a Transport Canada policy in place since 2014, which mandates that damaged or defective vehicle batteries be removed and transported separately from the vehicles themselves when on board ferries.
The move comes amid growing concerns about the fire risk associated with lithium-ion batteries in vehicles, particularly as EVs become more common across British Columbia.
The provincial ferry authority states it’s providing clearer guidance to its staff regarding EVs that are not fit to be driven. While functional EVs are still permitted on ferries, those that are damaged or non-operational will now be denied boarding.
