Vancouver, BC – A recent survey with “interesting” findings indicates that the BC Conservatives are leading the ruling BC NDP among young voters.
According to a poll conducted by Research Co., 49 percent of voters aged 18 to 34 support the Conservatives, while the NDP remains popular with voters aged 55 and over. Research Co.’s latest poll shows that 53 percent of those older voters would cast their ballot for the NDP.
Mario Canseco, President of Research Co., noted that this shift is “interesting to watch” he said in a recent interview that housing is a key factor.
“It’s not necessarily related to conservative values or culture wars or ‘wokeness’,” Canseco explained. “But it’s more about the frustration of getting something done with the housing file.” He views the poll results as an indicator that young people are unhappy with how the NDP and Premier David Eby have managed the housing issue.
However, the issue of soaring housing prices hasn’t hurt Eby’s overall popularity among voters. The survey shows the Premier’s approval rating is nearly 20 percentage points higher than that of opposition leader John Rustad.
56 percent of respondents approve of Eby’s performance as Premier, a one percent increase from the previous survey in March. Meanwhile, Rustad’s approval among voters has dropped by 3 percent, with currently 37 percent approving of his performance as opposition leader.
Canseco elaborated, “You have those voters who perhaps don’t like the NDP… but are not quite convinced that John Rustad is the best vehicle for change when it comes to the Premier’s office.”
Additionally, Rustad is now facing competition from two recently established parties on the political right. Canseco stated that both parties, Centre BC and One BC, which include former Conservatives Dallas Brodie, Jordan Kealy, and Tara Armstrong, “could attract the voters that Rustad wants to connect with.”
