The Opposition Conservatives are demanding the establishment of a bipartisan provincial task force in British Columbia to address fentanyl trafficking, organized crime, and drug production within the province.
Conservative Public Safety Critic and MLA Elenore Sturko is calling for urgent action following the release of a 2023 letter from United States (US) Secretary of State Antony Blinken. “This letter confirms high-level US intelligence concerns regarding British Columbia’s (BC’s) role in the fentanyl supply chain. The letter specifically confirms that BC officials were warned years ago about foreign state-sponsored criminals using the province as a production and trafficking hub.” she said.
BC Conservatives contend that despite these warnings, the NDP government took no action.
MLA Sturko said “This is about national security, organized crime, and the credibility of the BC provincial government. The NDP has allowed BC to become a hub for foreign-state-sponsored drug traffickers entering the global market. British Columbians urgently need decisive action and accountability.”
MLA Sturko asserted that the letter proves the NDP government ignored high-level warnings about BC’s central role in the North American fentanyl crisis, thereby undermining public safety across Canada and the US, and putting British Columbians at risk.
This revelation follows public claims by FBI Director Kash Patel that BC is now a part of the global fentanyl trafficking network.
BC Premier David Eby and Public Safety Minister Garry Begg have continued to deny the allegations, citing data.
