VANCOUVER, B.C. – The Conservative Party of British Columbia has quietly initiated voting on the leadership of John Rustad, a process anticipated to span approximately six months. This comes amidst ongoing questions surrounding Rustad’s management of a group of former Conservative MLAs, whom he recently accused of attempting to blackmail their former colleagues in a bid to take control of the party.
Rustad confirmed that in-person voting has already taken place in at least two ridings. He expects the balloting to conclude by December, once members across all 93 B.C. ridings have cast their votes.
The allegations of blackmail involve three former Conservative MLAs- Dallas Brodie, Tara Armstrong, and Jordan Kealy,- have vehemently denied the accusations.
Despite the controversy, the Opposition Leader expressed optimism regarding the vote’s outcome. He stated he hasn’t heard significant negativity, attributing any dissent to what he described as a “very small group of dissidents.” Rustad also reportedly finds humor in the alternative leadership names being circulated on social media.
Meanwhile, Conservative leader Gavin Dew stated that MLAs are confident in Rustad’s leadership. However, he added that they “are also continuing to have important conversations” about strategies to strengthen and expand the party’s influence.
