British Columbia Conservative leader, John Rustad, has proposed a new plan for Metro Vancouver’s regional government: eliminate it entirely.

Speaking at the annual Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM) convention, Rustad announced, “I can tell you this morning that a Conservative government will actually get rid of Metro Vancouver.”

He stated that the entity should be turned into what he believes it was meant to be: “a water, sewer, and garbage utility.” He argued that the current system includes “extra bureaucracy and cost” that is not needed.

British Columbia has 27 regional districts that cover the entire province, managing governance in rural areas and handling water, wastewater, and sewage operations in larger population centers.

Rustad said that if elected premier, he would change the community charter to completely abolish Metro Vancouver while keeping all other regional districts. Its responsibilities would be taken over by a new Crown corporation at the provincial level.

“We need a different model for metro,” Rustad said, “which is why we think it should be a utility, not a governance structure.” He did not provide a cost savings estimate for such a transition but predicted it would be substantial.
