In frustration, leaders from British Columbia and Washington state have delivered a clear message: Donald Trump’s trade war is causing real damage.

Premier David Eby stated in strong terms that the American president’s escalating tariff policies are “a recipe for mutually assured destruction.”

“The last time this happened was in the 1930s, and it led to a global economic depression that devastated the world economy for almost a generation,” Eby said. “We don’t need to relive that experience.”

He added that this round of tariffs is harming small businesses and, specifically, families on both sides of the border.

Eby says that BC is feeling approximately 20 percent of the impact from Canada’s retaliatory tariffs.

“Our unique geographic location, being on the coast, means we face additional challenges with tariff policy that other provinces do not,” he noted.

“Additional steel and aluminum retaliatory tariffs impact us. This is different from other provinces, and we need the federal government to recognize this and support us in the nationwide effort.”

Meanwhile, in Washington state, Democratic Senator Patty Murray says the effects are impacting local industries.

With cross-border travel from Canada down approximately 40 percent year-over-year, Murray says places like Blaine and Bellingham, Wash., are feeling the impact.

“How are hotel towns going to keep their doors open when cancellations are mounting and 75 percent of Canadian visitors are deciding to go elsewhere?” she asked.

Murray further urged, “If you want to understand the real cost of what’s happening, come to Washington state. Talk to people on the front lines of this senseless, painful trade war.”
