The bail hearing for the woman accused of entering the neonatal intensive care unit at Surrey Memorial Hospital and making skin-to-skin contact with three infants has been postponed until Monday.
Lindsey Susan Hirtreiter, 35, remains in custody following her weekend arrest in Surrey. She faces three counts of assault after allegedly entering the NICU on Oct. 28, removing her shirt, and touching the babies before security escorted her out.
Although the incident occurred over a month ago, it became a major focus in B.C.’s legislature Monday after a recent Surrey Police Service update led to her arrest. Police said they delayed asking the public for help because they first pursued multiple investigative steps that did not require a public appeal. They noted the suspect left the hospital on foot before officers were called, and referred questions about the hospital’s response to Fraser Health.
Fraser Health issued a statement calling the event a “highly unusual incident,” assuring families that all babies were unharmed, and confirming that screening procedures in maternity and neonatal units have since been strengthened.
Hospital-care advocate Connie Jorsvik said the delay in contacting police was concerning and highlighted ongoing security challenges in busy hospital environments, where intruders can sometimes blend in.
The allegations against Hirtreiter have not been proven. Police confirmed none of the infants were injured. Court records show she previously pleaded guilty to animal cruelty in 2016, receiving probation and a lifetime ban on owning animals after the court accepted she had been in a psychotic state at the time.
