Victoria, BC – The government of British Columbia is establishing a working group to address various safety concerns in supportive housing, including issues related to drug trafficking, weapons, and second-hand fentanyl exposure. The group—comprising representatives from law enforcement, supportive housing providers, unions, and BC Housing—was announced following several recent incidents, such as a fire on 11 June at the former Howard Johnson hotel in Vancouver, which injured two people.

Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon stated that the government is considering removing these facilities from the Residential Tenancy Act. This would give housing providers more authority to evict individuals who pose a danger to vulnerable residents. Additionally, the ministry is collaborating with the BC Centre for Disease Control to examine the impact of the toxic drug crisis on supportive housing environments.
