A professional truck driver from Abbotsford allegedly tried to hide the smell of alcohol by lighting a candle after being stopped by police on Dec. 4. According to an RCMP news release issued Tuesday (Dec. 9), the incident happened around 9 a.m., when BC Highway Patrol officers pulled the driver over in Fruitvale, near Trail.
At the time, the 52-year-old man was operating a Peterbilt tractor-trailer—owned by an Agassiz trucking company—and hauling two loaded flatbed trailers on Highway 3B. Police had clocked the truck at 75 km/h in a 60 km/h zone, and when they stopped the vehicle, they found a candle burning in the cab, the release said.
“It’s possible the driver just really likes Christmas candles. It’s also possible he was trying to mask the smell of alcohol,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin of BC Highway Patrol.
A breath test returned a “warn” result, indicating the driver was over the legal limit. He received a three-day immediate driving ban, a three-day vehicle impound, a $138 speeding ticket, and a $230 fine for having open liquor in the truck.
