The provincial government is set to provide an update today on its ongoing efforts to recruit doctors and nurses from the United States.
Minister of Health Josie Osborne will hold a media event this afternoon to discuss the progress of the initiative.
In June, the province launched a $5 million advertising campaign specifically targeting healthcare workers in B.C. The Ministry of Health stated that the campaign would be displayed on thousands of advertising screens within a 16-kilometer radius of healthcare facilities in Washington, Oregon, and California. The ads would also appear on podcasts and Netflix shows.
A provincial release in July reported that since the campaign began, over 2,000 health professionals had “signed up for webinars and expressed interest in working in B.C.”
On July 7, a new bylaw by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC (CPSBC) came into effect, allowing American doctors with certain certifications to become fully licensed in B.C. At the time, Osborne noted that the college had already received 29 applications for registration from doctors in the U.S.
The province had allocated $4 billion for healthcare in this year’s budget, which included plans for hiring more staff. Premier David Eby also announced a significant reduction in the application wait times for nurses, from four months down to a matter of days.
