About 2,000 workers are on strike in Victoria, Surrey, and Prince George after the B.C. General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) and the Professional Employees Association followed through on strike notice issued last week.

Finance Minister Brenda Bailey declined to discuss the government’s offer but extended an overture to the BCGEU.

Union president Paul Finch said the walkout is a “last resort” in the fight for fair wages across a wide range of public sector professions, adding that British Columbians support the cause and job action will continue until a deal is reached.

The BCGEU is calling for a 4 per cent wage increase in the first year and 4.2 to 5 per cent in the second year, along with cost-of-living adjustments. Finch says, strike was the last resort for workers to get what they deserve.
