Hundreds of B.C. public sector workers marched through downtown Vancouver today, calling for a new contract.

B.C. General Employees’ Union president Paul Finch said the union “didn’t set out to pick a fight” with the government, but instead brought forward the concerns and experiences of its members during negotiations. He noted that talks, which resumed Monday, ended quickly after the province tabled a contract that was nearly identical to its earlier offer.

Premier David Eby said his government’s proposal of a five per cent wage increase over two years is fair and reasonable, stressing that it is “crucial” to reach a resolution soon. He added that the government must balance the important contributions of public servants with the fiscal pressures and rising costs facing the province.

The union has been seeking an eight per cent increase over two years, compared with the government’s five per cent offer.
