British Columbia Premier David Eby stated that he has received no evidence to suggest that agents of the Indian government are involved in the wave of extortion threats currently plaguing the province. His comments come amid heightened scrutiny and ongoing questions regarding foreign interference and transnational repression within Canada.
In a recent interview with CTV News, Eby clarified the provincial government’s current standing on the matter. “I want to be clear, at this point, we do not have any information at the political level that the government of India is involved in this,” he said. While acknowledging that police agencies may hold specific details as part of their active investigations, the Premier insisted that no such briefings have been provided to his office linking the Indian state to these specific crimes.
Eby characterized the targeted violence against the South Asian community and local business owners in the Lower Mainland as the province’s “number one public safety issue.”
The Premier noted that current allegations point toward the Bishnoi Gang as the primary entity behind the extortion racket.
He highlighted that the federal government has officially listed the Bishnoi Gang as a terrorist criminal organization, noting that it “operates primarily out of India.”
The Premier’s remarks appear to stand in contrast to statements made by the RCMP in October 2024. At that time, federal police accused Indian diplomats and consular officials based in Canada of being linked to serious criminal activities, including homicides and extortion.
Despite the friction between these assessments, Eby—who led a trade mission to India in January—expressed hope that if any government officials do possess evidence of foreign state involvement, it is being shared with police to form the basis of their criminal investigations.
