B.C. Premier David Eby is defending his government’s decision to hire speechwriters, calling the positions “necessary” after the opposition Conservatives claimed the NDP government was spending up to $450,000 on a single writer.

The controversy began when the B.C. Conservatives released a copy of a contract between the government and Vancouver comedian Charles Demers. The contract showed that Demers’ compensation could reach $450,000 over four years if he remained in the position.

In response, Eby clarified that Demers’ contract has only totaled $14,000 so far and that the comedian is one of five speechwriters essential to the Premier’s office.

Eby also stated that using contractors like Demers allows the province to claw back costs, which his office and all other government offices are doing in an effort to balance the budget.
