As leaders from British Columbia’s municipalities head to their annual meeting in Victoria, addressing downtown disorder is at the top of their minds.
According to the head of the Union of B.C. Municipalities, issues like street disorder, homelessness, and mental health will be the main topics at this week’s annual convention for local government leaders in Victoria.
Coquitlam Councillor Trish Mandewo stated that local leaders want to see action from the provincial government on these issues, as communities are heavily affected by the number of people on the streets dealing with mental health and addiction problems.
She added that while local governments are doing their best to help these individuals, the provincial government isn’t doing enough to add supportive housing, detox, and addiction treatments.
