A British Columbia Mountie has been ordered to resign within 14 days or face immediate dismissal after being found guilty of making sexist comments and engaging in discreditable conduct in group chats.
RCMP adjudicator Louise Morel, in delivering the decision, characterized the actions of Coquitlam Constable Ian Solven as a “fundamental breach of public trust.” Morel stated that allowing such an officer to remain on the force would further damage the reputation of the RCMP, adding that it was “incomprehensible” how a police officer could deem it appropriate to post such vulgar and offensive comments.
In November, Morel found that Constables Ian Solven, Mersad Mesbah, and Philip Dick failed to treat the public with respect and courtesy. The officers were found to have committed discreditable conduct by posting racist, misogynistic, and homophobic comments in a group chat with other officers and on police computer terminals.
While the decision regarding Constable Solven has been finalized, the fate of the other two officers involved is expected to be announced early next year.
