A B.C. mother with terminal cancer says long waits in the province’s health-care system may have allowed her disease to spread. Sara Gillooly says she waited months between tests and nearly two months to see an oncologist after being diagnosed with breast cancer, delays she believes contributed to the cancer metastasizing to her bones and lungs.
Independent MLA Amelia Boultbee shared Gillooly’s story to highlight what she calls systemic failures, noting thousands of patients have died while on treatment waitlists.
Gillooly says she considered seeking care outside Canada but stayed in B.C. to be with her family, a decision she now questions.
In a statement to 1130 News Radio, Health Minister Josie Osborne acknowledged the distress caused by wait times and said the province is investing in the health-care system and monitoring access to surgeries, treatments, and diagnostic exams.
