Interior Health is proposing a virtual emergency care pilot program for four communities in British Columbia’s Interior to help reduce ER closures caused by staffing shortages.

According to a statement from the health authority, hospitals in Clearwater, Nakusp, Lillooet, and Princeton are similar in size and experience low overnight patient volumes. The pilot would allow doctors to “share responsibilities” using a combination of virtual and on-site staffing.

Interior Health said it is collaborating with physicians and staff to explore options for the program and test its feasibility.

Health Minister Josie Osborne described the initiative as a “forward-looking approach” that will strengthen rural emergency services and ensure patients receive timely care.

Many B.C. emergency rooms have faced repeated overnight and weekend closures due to insufficient staff to cover shifts.
