Victoria: Communities across British Columbia will benefit from $7.5 million in grants to support local initiatives aimed at preventing crime, advancing healing, and strengthening public safety.
Through the Civil Forfeiture Grant Program, the NDP government is providing one-time funding of $7.5 million to support 166 community-based projects across the province. These projects are being led by local governments, school districts, health authorities, academic institutions, police departments, and Indigenous organizations.
Of the $7.5 million:
- $900,000 will support specialized police equipment and training;
- $500,000 will support the Anti-Hate Community Support Fund;
- $200,000 will support the response to the tragedy following the Lapu Lapu Festival on April 26.
Minister of Public Safety Mike Farnworth stated, “Community safety is one of our top priorities, and a key part of that is ensuring organizations working in our communities have the resources they need to drive change.”
The Civil Forfeiture Office, which funds this grant program, was established in 2006 to target the proceeds and tools of unlawful activity. Since then, over $90 million in grants have been distributed to support community organizations across B.C.
NDP MLA Jessie Sunner said the funding will support crime prevention projects in Surrey. MLA Sunner, who represents Surrey–Newton, said people in Surrey will benefit from projects that improve public safety, help prevent violence, and promote healing.
