A British Columbia court ordered a furniture store, Muse & Merchant, to pay $500 in damages to a couple who bought a feather-filled sofa without being informed it required regular fluffing to maintain its shape. Donna and Thomas Dobko said they would not have purchased the couch if they had known about the maintenance involved.

The store refused their request for a refund after seven months of use, arguing the sofa wasn’t defective and that its condition was normal for feather-filled furniture. The court found that the store failed to inform the couple of the manufacturer’s warnings about the upkeep required. While the sofa still functioned properly, the judge ruled the couple was entitled to compensation for the unexpected inconvenience and awarded them $500 plus $75 in court fees.
