A brand of anchovy fillets is being recalled across several Canadian provinces due to elevated levels of histamine.

The affected product—Vicente Marino Anchovy Fillets in Olive Oil (80g/42g), UPC: 80268215, Lot# 24171, Expiry: 12/2025—was distributed in Alberta, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan, and potentially other regions.

The recall, initiated by the company, was announced on Thursday after reports of adverse reactions related to consumption of the product.

According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), a food safety investigation is underway and could lead to additional product recalls. The CFIA is also working to ensure all affected products are removed from stores.

Histamine is a naturally occurring chemical released by the immune system, but high levels can cause histamine poisoning or intolerance, affecting the digestive system, skin, respiratory system, and nervous system.

Symptoms of excess histamine may include:

  • Bloating, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
  • Nasal congestion, sneezing
  • Hives, itching, skin irritation
  • Headaches, fatigue, anxiety
  • Sleep disturbances, low blood pressure, irregular heartbeat
  • Abdominal pain, shortness of breath, and menstrual cramps

Consumers are urged not to consume, serve, sell, or distribute the recalled product. They should dispose of it or return it to the store where it was purchased.

Anyone who has consumed the product and is experiencing symptoms is advised to seek medical attention immediately.
