Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand says that while negotiating a trade agreement with India, Canada continues to take issues such as public safety, transnational repression, and foreign interference very seriously.

“It is very important that such issues be taken very seriously, and we do so,” Anand stated. She emphasized that public safety remains the government’s top priority at all times.

The Minister’s statement comes immediately after Prime Minister Mark Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed to restart negotiations for a new trade agreement. Carney had previously said that this deal could double trade between the two countries, potentially reaching $70 billion.

This latest development signals an improvement in relations between the two nations following deep tensions that arose from Canadian accusations of the involvement of Indian agents in the 2023 murder of Canadian Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Anand affirmed that the government is “recalibrating” economic ties while simultaneously ensuring that Canadian law enforcement agencies continue to operate independently.
