The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) says it is handling a rising volume of immigration security screening requests — and immigration lawyers report that this is causing significant delays for their clients.

According to CSIS’s latest annual report, the agency received over 538,000 screening requests from immigration and border authorities in 2024, up sharply from the average of around 300,000 requests per year prior to 2023.

While acknowledging a large backlog of applications awaiting security screening, CSIS stated it will take the necessary time to complete each case.

The surge in requests is partly due to an increase in asylum claims, as all asylum seekers must undergo security screening.

Immigration lawyers in British Columbia and Ontario say their clients are experiencing prolonged wait times, with little to no explanation for the delays.
