Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to travel to Washington early next week to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump – his second visit since becoming prime minister. Carney will meet Trump on Tuesday at White House.
This latest visit comes as Canadian and American officials are trying to reach a deal on punishing U.S. tariffs and as a review of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) gets underway.
Trump launched a trade war in February by implementing sweeping tariffs on Canadian goods. While he has since carved out an exemption for imports that comply with CUSMA, he has also imposed significant sectoral tariffs on lumber, steel, aluminum, autos, and copper.
Canada and the U.S. have been engaged in months of negotiations for a new economic and security deal. Carney and his team have stressed that they are prioritizing achieving the “best deal” over simply reaching a timely one.
