The British Columbia government has declared provincial meat inspectors as essential workers, a move that comes amid a public service strike.

B.C. Agriculture Minister Lana Popham stated that she was pleased to have worked with the BC General Employees Union (BCGEU) to make this change.

The decision, made late Thursday night, follows complaints from farmers and meat processors across the province who warned that the ongoing strike was threatening the industry.

Paul Finch, president of the BCGEU, said the provincial government should have declared these employees essential much earlier.

“Abattoirs play a critical role in supporting farmers and ranchers throughout B.C.

“I am very pleased that we have been able to successfully work with the BCGEU to have provincial meat inspectors classified as essential workers during this round of job action.

“I am grateful for the BCGEU’s collaboration and willingness to work with us to safeguard human health, support animal welfare and support the farmers and producers of this province.”
