Multiple online reports suggest a suspect allegedly wanted in connection with extortion and threats was reportedly taken into custody by police in Surrey’s Little India Plaza late Tuesday night. While the Surrey Police Service (SPS) did not immediately confirm the specific arrest made on Tuesday, it emphasized that investigations into the city’s rampant extortion crisis are receiving the highest priority.

Information received suggests the individual and their vehicle were being sought by police for some time as part of an ongoing investigation into criminal activities.

Ian MacDonald, SPS Media Relations in an email statement said “SPS and the BC Extortion Task Force have executed numbers of warrants, detained and identified several individuals and otherwise interdicted and disrupted criminal activities. Only when we have approved extortion related charges can we inform the media and public, usually via News Release. Until then, our active investigations continue and those believed to be extortion related receive the highest priority.”

The recent development comes as Surrey faces a deepening extortion crisis. As recently confirmed, the SPS is investigating over 100 extortion files this year, many of which are linked to acts of violence and shootings.

The provincial and municipal governments have established dedicated task forces and tip lines to combat the organized criminal activity impacting communities and businesses across the region.
