B.C. Attorney General Niki Sharma has introduced amendments to the Business Practices and Consumer Protection Amendment Act aimed at modernizing the province’s consumer protection laws.
Sharma said the updates will allow individuals to set up security alerts and credit freezes at any time, while requiring banks to verify a person’s identity when a security alert is triggered, helping to prevent fraudulent loans.
According to the province, these changes will bring British Columbia’s laws in line with consumer protection standards already established in provinces such as Ontario and Quebec.
Sharma also noted that the amendments will give people free monthly access to their credit reports and scores, improving transparency and oversight.
Additionally, credit repair companies will no longer be permitted to make misleading promises of guaranteed credit score improvements or charge upfront fees for their services.
