Job action in B.C.’s public sector has intensified.
On Thursday morning, the Professional Employees Association (PEA) held a news conference to announce that all government-licensed professionals in the union are now on strike. The union represents more than 1,800 licensed workers, including engineers, foresters, geoscientists, and psychologists.
The PEA said negotiations with the provincial government broke down in May after the province failed to address key issues, including wages, job security, and the reliance on external contractors.
Speaking Thursday, PEA Executive Director Melissa Moroz said the union’s bargaining committee returned to the table on Tuesday.
“We presented a revised monetary offer, and the employer came with nothing,” Moroz said. “Their July offer remained unchanged. We’ve been on strike for seven weeks, standing alongside our allies in the BCGEU, and like them, we are ready for a fair deal.”
On August 29, members voted in favour of strike action, issued a 72-hour notice, and some joined BCGEU picket lines on September 2. As of Thursday, all PEA members have joined the strike.
“This is a significant step for our small union. We’ve only gone on strike once before, and now we are entering week eight. It shows the determination and seriousness of our members. We want a fair deal, and it’s time for the government to return to the bargaining table and negotiate in good faith,” said Moroz.
The BCGEU strike is now in its seventh week, and some local restaurants report ongoing impacts on their business.
