The Alberta government intends to develop and submit a formal application to the federal Major Projects Office for a new bitumen pipeline to the northwest coast of British Columbia.

On Wednesday, the province announced it would invest $14 million in the proposal and serve as the project proponent, leading a “technical advisory group” that includes three major pipeline companies—Enbridge, South Bow, and Trans Mountain—though these companies would not necessarily participate if the project moves forward.

No specific pipeline route has been proposed yet; identifying potential routes will be part of the province’s planned work. Both the federal government and the British Columbia government have been informed of Alberta’s plans.

Some Indigenous groups have already been consulted, including the Fort McKay First Nation and the National Coalition of Chiefs.

“This project application is about more than a pipeline; it’s about unlocking Canada’s full economic potential,” Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said in a statement. The province aims to eventually partner with a private-sector company, or a consortium of companies, to build and operate the new bitumen pipeline.

Alberta expects to submit its application to the Major Projects Office in spring 2026.

British Columbia premier David Eby  says the Alberta project would be entirely taxpayer funded and First Nations along the coast have opposed such a project.
