The Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) has rejected a request from the provincial government to end the province-wide strike on Monday and enter into Enhanced Mediation (improved mediation).
Jason Schilling, President of the Alberta Teachers’ Association, stated that the proposed mediation process would be biased because the provincial government is unwilling to discuss the core issue of caps on classroom sizes.
According to Schilling, this limit on classroom size is the main sticking point in the contract dispute, and teachers are not prepared to back down. He added that the union would consider ending the strike only if the government changes its stance and agrees to discuss the issue of classroom sizes.
The teachers’ strike has now entered its ninth school day, affecting approximately 740,000 students across 2,500 schools.
51,000 teachers initially walked off the job on October 6. While the two sides met for the first time on Tuesday since the strike began, formal talks have not yet resumed.
