The Alberta government announced on Wednesday that it plans to submit an application to the Major Projects Office to build a new oil pipeline to Northwestern British Columbia. However, the proposal immediately drew sharp criticism from B.C. Premier David Eby, who has long opposed the project.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith confirmed her government will submit the application to the federal government next spring. Smith explained that Alberta will act as the proponent, advancing the project with the support and technical advice of three crude pipeline companies.

Eby stated, “The problem that we have is Smith continues to advance a project that is taxpayer-funded, has no private sector proponent, is not a real project and is incredibly alarming to British Columbians, especially First Nations along the coast.”

Smith noted that she called Eby on Monday to give him a heads-up about the announcement.

Defending the project, Smith argued that coastal provinces have a duty to cooperate. “I think coastal provinces have a special obligation to be generous and make sure we’re creating access to ports for all of our products,” she said.
