In a significant blow to the official opposition, Alberta Member of Parliament Matt Jeneroux has crossed the floor from the Conservative Party to join the Liberal caucus. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the move on social media this morning, stating he is honored to welcome Jeneroux as the newest member of the government’s team. Alongside the move, the Prime Minister appointed Jeneroux as a new Special Advisor on Economic and Security Partnerships.
The defection marks a major reversal for Jeneroux, who had unexpectedly announced plans to resign last November. At that time, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre stated that Jeneroux intended to step down as an MP by the spring. However, in a statement released today, Jeneroux explained that he changed his mind after consulting with his family, noting that the current political climate demands “steady leadership” for the country.
Jeneroux is now the third Conservative MP to join the Liberal caucus in recent months. His arrival provides much-needed relief for the Carney government, which remains several seats short of a majority. The Liberals have faced recent seat losses following the high-profile resignations of Chrystia Freeland and Bill Blair, as well as a court ruling that overturned an election result in a Quebec riding.
In his welcoming remarks, Prime Minister Mark Carney highlighted Jeneroux’s extensive experience, noting his service in the Alberta Legislature starting in 2012 and his tenure representing Edmonton Riverbend in Parliament since 2015. While in Ottawa, Jeneroux held several key ‘Shadow Minister’ portfolios for the Conservatives, including supply chains, innovation, infrastructure, health, and housing.
The Prime Minister also pointed to Jeneroux’s strong international ties, noting he has built direct working relationships with lawmakers across NATO, Europe, and Asia. According to Carney, Jeneroux’s leadership will be instrumental in strengthening Canada’s global alliances and trade partnerships.
