On Tuesday evening, the public address and flight information display systems at two B.C. airports were hacked by a third party.
Kelowna International Airport and Victoria International Airport confirmed the incidents in emailed statements. Transport Canada also acknowledged the hacks, noting a similar incident at Windsor International Airport.
“Transport Canada is working closely with federal security partners, including law enforcement, to ensure airport operations remain safe and secure, and to prevent similar disruptions in the future,” the federal agency said.
Kelowna International Airport is investigating the breach. Several media users reported seeing and hearing pro-Hamas and anti-Trump messages at the airport in B.C.’s Okanagan region. The PA system was restored within about 20 seconds, while the images on the displays took a few minutes to be removed.
Although a few flights were delayed, airport operations returned to normal Tuesday night, and a full schedule of flights was expected on Wednesday.
