Air Canada has announced the temporary suspension of all flight services to Cuba, citing a critical shortage of aviation fuel on the island. The airline reached this decision following an official notification from the Cuban government stating that fuel would no longer be available at its airports starting Tuesday.
The fuel crisis is part of a broader, worsening energy emergency in Cuba. Analysts point to the long-standing U.S. blockade and restrictions on oil shipments to the Caribbean nation as the primary drivers behind the current instability.
To assist travelers affected by the sudden shutdown, Air Canada confirmed it will dispatch empty aircraft to Cuba over the coming days. These “rescue flights” are intended to bring approximately 3,000 customers currently on the island safely back to Canada.
While Air Canada has moved to halt operations immediately, other Canadian carriers are taking a different approach. Both Air Transat and WestJet/Sunwing have stated they intend to maintain their scheduled flights for the time being, despite the fuel availability warnings.
The suspension of Air Canada flights is effective as of today. The airline has advised passengers with cancelled bookings that they will be contacted directly with further information regarding refunds or alternative travel arrangements.
