Air Canada flight attendants are set to hold pickets at airports in four major Canadian cities on Monday, as part of what their union calls a “national day of action.”

According to the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), demonstrations will take place at 1 p.m. ET at Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport, Toronto Pearson International Airport, Vancouver International Airport, and Calgary International Airport. The union says the goal is to highlight what it describes as “poverty wages” and unpaid work for duties performed while planes are on the ground.

The Air Canada division of CUPE was scheduled to resume contract negotiations with the airline on Friday, after members voted 99.7 per cent in favour of a strike mandate. This vote, completed last Tuesday, means flight attendants could walk off the job as early as 12:01 a.m. on Aug. 16, with at least 72 hours’ notice.

Contract talks have been ongoing since the start of the year, but after a conciliation process ended without an agreement, the strike mandate was issued. Air Canada, in a statement last Tuesday, said it believes there is still time to reach a deal and prevent disruptions for thousands of travellers.
