Air Canada has started cancelling flights today as it prepares for a possible work stoppage this weekend. The union representing roughly 10,000 flight attendants is poised to strike at 1 a.m. on Saturday, with Air Canada also issuing a lockout notice for the same time.

The airline stated that if a deal is not reached, flight cancellations would begin today, with more disruptions on Friday, leading to a complete shutdown of services by Saturday.

In a statement, Air Canada confirmed that affected customers will be eligible for a full refund. The airline has also arranged “to the extent possible” for alternative travel options with other Canadian and international carriers.

To avoid the work stoppage, Air Canada has requested government-directed arbitration. However, Ottawa has not yet signaled whether it will intervene. Federal Labour Minister Patty Hajdu had previously urged both parties in a statement on Tuesday to “stay at the table until a deal is found.”
