Air Canada has announced that passengers affected by recent labour action can apply for reimbursement, according to information posted on the airline’s website.

Customers seeking a refund must complete a form with their flight details and explain the reason for their claim. The airline specifies that the form should only be filled out by passengers who booked directly with Air Canada, have already completed part of their journey with the airline, or require reimbursement for alternative transportation.

Those who booked through Aeroplan, a travel agent, an online travel agency, or another airline are instructed not to use the form.

According to Gabor Lukacs, president of Air Passenger Rights, Canada’s Air Passenger Protection Regulations require airlines to provide either alternative flights—regardless of cost—or a refund in cases of strikes. For international travellers, the Montreal Convention may entitle passengers to additional compensation of up to $12,500 if they can demonstrate financial loss or damages caused by the disruption.

Hundreds of thousands of passengers were affected by the recent strike involving Air Canada’s flight attendants. Flights began resuming Tuesday afternoon after the airline reached a tentative agreement with the union representing more than 10,000 attendants.

While details of the deal are still being finalized, a union representative confirmed  that flight attendants will begin receiving partial pay for ground duties performed before departure—50% of their hourly wage for smaller aircraft (up to one hour before takeoff) and for 70 minutes before departure on larger planes. The rate is meant to increase annually to reach 70 per cent of their pay for ground work by the time the agreement expires in 2029.

Flight attendants are also set to receive a salary increase, the union representative said.
