U.S. border officials have informed Global News that vehicle searches for traffic heading north into Canada are now standard procedure and will continue indefinitely.
On Thursday, Global News was given exclusive access to operations at the Blaine border crossing, including over five hours of briefings with the port director, an agriculture specialist, and representatives from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
According to U.S. authorities, most Canadians returning north are simply transporting typical goods like fuel and groceries. However, beginning May 1, border agents have intensified vehicle inspections to target drug smuggling and human trafficking. On that same day, they seized ammunition from a traveller enrolled in the Nexus program.
When asked why these outbound checks are continuing despite limited findings, U.S. officials said it would be irresponsible to stop them, given the ongoing issue of cross-border drug trafficking. They also clarified that border agents are not reading Canadians’ text messages or social media, nor are they asking political questions, such as opinions about President Donald Trump—calling such claims baseless rumors.
