In the past two years, Abbotsford and several other communities have seen multiple incidents of extortion-related violence, including threats and intimidation targeting both individuals and businesses. Some cases have escalated into shootings and property damage. As part of Operation Community Shield, the Abbotsford Police Department (AbbyPD) continues to respond through focused investigations, community outreach, and prevention efforts.

To enhance this work, AbbyPD is launching Project Disengage, an intervention and exit-support program for people who are involved in, or at risk of being drawn into, extortion-related crime. Many youth and young adults are being recruited into these activities through promises of fast money or pressure stemming from challenging life situations.

“Extortionists have no boundaries—they will manipulate, intimidate, and exploit anyone for their own gain,” said Nina Krieger, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “I want to thank AbbyPD for their commitment, leadership, and cooperation in working to eliminate these extortion threats.”

Ross Siemens, Chair of the Abbotsford Police Board and Mayor of Abbotsford, added, “Project Disengage is the first initiative of its kind in the province and marks a significant step in addressing extortion-related violence at its source.”

“Project Disengage is a bold new approach to safeguarding our community. Enforcement alone isn’t enough—real change comes from offering a path out for those trapped in cycles of violence,” said Chief Constable Colin Watson.

If someone is trying to recruit you, walk away, disengage —organized crime is not the answer. Anyone seeking assistance is asked to contact the Project Disengage Helpline at 778-880-6610 or visit http://abbypd.ca/extortion-project-disengage
