Police in Abbotsford, B.C., have announced the creation of their own task force to tackle local extortion cases, following the recent launch of a provincial team focused on crimes targeting the South Asian community.

The Abbotsford task force will include both full- and part-time members from other areas and will focus on disrupting and investigating extortion within the city. Last week, the RCMP and the B.C. government unveiled a provincial extortion task force comprising 40 members from law enforcement agencies across the province. Two Abbotsford officers are already serving on that provincial team.

Extortion and related violent incidents have affected multiple communities in B.C., including Surrey, where the mayor recently announced a $250,000 reward fund for information leading to convictions. Since November 2023, Abbotsford police have received 38 reports of extortion-related cases, most of which were non-violent, involving threats via phone calls, letters, or text messages.
