Fear and panic have gripped grassroots politicians in Punjab after Harbarinder Singh, a 40-year-old Sarpanch belonging to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), was shot dead in broad daylight on Wednesday. The incident took place at approximately 3:15 p.m. during a wedding ceremony in Sheron village, located in the Tarn Taran district, when two assailants opened indiscriminate fire. A relative of the deceased, identified as Jermandeep Singh, was also injured in the attack.

Harbarinder Singh, who served as the Sarpanch of Thathiyan Mahanta village and was also a grain merchant and farmer by profession, had gone to attend his relative’s wedding. According to eyewitnesses, three motorcycle-borne attackers arrived at the venue armed with pistols and targeted the Sarpanch. When Jermandeep Singh tried to retaliate, an assailant armed with an AK-47 shot and wounded him. The attackers then fled the scene without any hindrance.

An eyewitness reported that the assailants were dressed in designer suits and made no effort to hide their faces or flee discreetly. This targeted killing has caused significant alarm among the public and local AAP leaders, as it marks the second such high-profile murder in just two months. Earlier, on January 5, Jarmal Singh, another AAP Sarpanch from Valtoha Sandhua village, was shot dead during a wedding in Amritsar.

The law and order situation remains a major concern in the region, as political figures continue to be targeted. Only last month, on January 3, Congress leader Umarsir Singh was also shot dead in Bhinder Kalan village of Moga district. Local police have launched an investigation into the latest killing of Harbarinder Singh and are conducting raids to nab the fleeing suspects.
