A teenager has died following a suspected drowning Thursday evening near Victoria.
West Shore RCMP said officers were called to Thetis Lake in View Royal around 5:09 p.m.
According to witnesses, a 19-year-old man was swimming in Upper Thetis Lake when he went underwater and did not resurface.
Bystanders tried to locate him by swimming out but were unsuccessful.
Emergency crews and Capital Regional District parks staff launched a search. The View Royal Fire Department deployed a boat and searched the lake into the evening, but efforts were halted due to darkness.
On Friday, firefighters and the RCMP’s underwater recovery team returned to the area to continue searching for the body.
In a statement, RCMP extended condolences to the victim’s family, friends, and those who tried to save him.
