One person was killed and another injured in a shooting at Kentucky State University that disrupted students’ final exams before winter break, police said.

The suspect has been taken into custody.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said he is “aware of some injuries,” and Frankfort Assistant Police Chief Scott Tracy told affiliate WDRB that two people were wounded. The shooting occurred in Young Hall, a campus dormitory. The campus remains on lockdown as law enforcement continues to secure the area.

The incident happened around 3:35 p.m., when Frankfort police responded to reports of an “active aggressor,” the department said.

University officials said they are still gathering accurate information before releasing a formal statement.

Kentucky State University, founded in 1886, has more than 2,200 students and 450 faculty and staff, according to its website.

The shooting follows two other attacks at historically Black universities during homecoming events in October. Five people were injured near Howard University in Washington, D.C., though none were students. The next day, at least one person was killed and six others injured during homecoming weekend at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania.
