The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is updating its policies to require all non-citizens — including Canadians — to have their photographs taken when entering or leaving the United States.

The new security regulations, published in the Federal Register today, are scheduled to take effect on December 26, though full implementation may take several years.

According to the notice, the change is intended to strengthen national security and help prevent individuals from overstaying their visas.

The photo records may be stored for up to 75 years.

The department noted that U.S. Customs and Border Protection has been collecting biometric data from certain travellers since 2004. However, there is currently no comprehensive system for collecting the same information from people departing the country.
