The B.C. Green Party has announced that a 24-year-old advocate for climate justice and Indigenous rights, Emily Lowan, has entered the party’s leadership race.
Lowan is the second candidate to declare her intention to run, following Comox town councillor and physician Jonathan Kerr. The leadership contest was triggered after Sonia Furstenau, who led the party since 2020, announced her resignation following her loss in the last provincial election.
In a news release, Lowan stated that her campaign will focus on halting large-scale projects that disregard Indigenous rights, introducing vacancy control, reducing the cost of living, and increasing taxes on the ultra-wealthy. She says these measures would help fund affordable housing, free public transit, and sustainable “green” jobs.
The B.C. Green Party says additional candidates will be revealed in the coming days. A town hall is scheduled for August, followed by a candidate debate in September. Party members will vote between September 13 and 23, with the results to be announced on September 24.
