On March 13, RCMP in Blue Hills, Manitoba ,were alerted by INTERPOL to an online exchange between two teenage boys — a 15-year-old from Nova Scotia and a 14-year-old from Rivers, Manitoba.
Investigators determined the conversation began in late February and allegedly included discussions by the Manitoba youth about harming students at Rivers Collegiate. Police quickly launched an investigation to identify and locate the suspect before the school week began.
On the morning of March 16, officers stopped a school bus near Provincial Road 250 and arrested the 14-year-old, who was unarmed. His phone and other electronic devices were seized. Additional searches at two properties linked to the youth led to the seizure of more devices and other items, including two firearms owned by a relative.
Superintendent Lee Fortin said officers acted swiftly alongside policing partners to ensure the safety of students and the community, adding that reporting suspicious behaviour remains critical as similar threats increase.
The youth has been charged with uttering threats, and police say more charges could follow as the investigation continues.
Meanwhile, police in Nova Scotia confirmed the arrest of a second suspect connected to the case. The Bridgewater Police Service said it was alerted by INTERPOL and the Federal Bureau of Investigation about the same online conversations involving the 15-year-old from Bridgewater, Nova Scotia.
The discussions allegedly included plans for coordinated attacks at Park View Education Centre and Rivers Collegiate. Police arrested the Bridgewater teen on Tuesday.
A search of a residence uncovered handwritten plans, imitation weapons — including a fake pipe bomb and an imitation assault rifle — along with clothing displaying hate symbols and other concerning messages. Officers also seized a cellphone and a laptop as part of the ongoing investigation.
