A driver is dead following a violent single-vehicle crash in Abbotsford late Monday night. Because the incident occurred during a police interaction, British Columbia’s civilian police watchdog, the Independent Investigations Office (IIO), has been called in to investigate.
The Abbotsford Police Department confirmed that the fatal incident began at approximately 11:37 p.m. on March 16. A patrol officer observed a Dodge Ram traveling at a high rate of speed along Maclure Road near Townline Road and attempted to signal the driver to pull over.
According to investigators, the driver failed to stop and instead fled the scene. Moments later, the vehicle lost control near the intersection of Old Yale Road, veering off the pavement and striking a tree. The impact was so severe that the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the collision.
The IIO was notified shortly after the crash, as per standard protocol for any police-related incident involving death or serious injury. The oversight agency will now conduct an independent investigation to determine whether the actions of the officers played a direct role in the driver’s death.
