Global Affairs Canada says it has assisted more than 7,000 Canadians in leaving the Middle East since the latest conflict began, with requests for evacuation support now declining.
Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand is encouraging Canadians who are considering leaving the region to do so, noting that daily calls for assistance have dropped to about half of what they were a week ago.
According to The Canadian Press, the department says more than 4,300 Canadians, permanent residents and their family members arrived in Canada between March 4 and March 8 through both direct and indirect travel routes.
Another 871 people were helped to leave the region for a safe third country, such as Turkey.
As of Sunday, fewer than five per cent of the roughly 110,000 Canadians registered in the region had requested help to leave. Global Affairs Canada also says it is not aware of any Canadians being killed or injured in the violence that began with U.S. airstrikes on Iran on Feb. 28.
