Vancouver city councillor Sean Orr has filed a defamation lawsuit against Mayor Ken Sim, accusing him of falsely claiming Orr distributed illegal drugs on Christmas Day.
The civil claim, filed Tuesday in B.C. Supreme Court, alleges Sim acted “deliberately, maliciously and in bad faith” when he made the allegation during a briefing with Chinese-language media last month.
According to the lawsuit, Sim told attendees that the COPE councillor had been “handing out illegal drugs on Christmas Day to people on the street,” while contrasting Orr’s actions with those of members of his own ABC party. The claim also quotes Sim as saying, “If you like getting free illegal drugs, you probably don’t like me or ABC.”
The lawsuit argues Sim made the statement knowing it was false, or with reckless disregard for its accuracy, and did so to gain political advantage.
